High-Retention  ocular drug delivery systems shortly (H-R-ODDS) developed by Mohan Venkadesan is a systemic and advanced therapeutic approach that is Pharmacokinetically designed to improve drug bioavailability and prolong drug residence time on the ocular surface. The system utilizes specially designed substances as drug reservoirs, enabling sustained and controlled release of medications directly to the cornea. Compared with conventional eye drops, corneal contact drug delivery systems reduce drug loss caused by blinking and tear drainage, thereby enhancing therapeutic efficacy and patient compliance.

The Personal connection

After having personally observed people undergoing various eye surgeries in surgical theatre and a surgery undergone by my close family member and the post-op challenges, led me to rethink the drug delivery effectiveness.

The First Step

As a first step for this particular project, I am developing a contact-based ocular drug delivery system to improve the effectiveness of treatment for chronic and post-surgical eye conditions. Current eye drops are limited by poor retention and low patient adherence, meaning most of the drug is lost before it can be effective. My approach uses a contact lens–based platform that enables sustained and controlled drug release directly at the eye surface, improving drug bioavailability and treatment consistency. The goal is to make ocular therapy more effective, reliable, and patient-friendly within existing ophthalmology care pathways.
